Walnut drying in industrial gardens

The stages of nut production are the same for all types - walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, etc. In industrial gardens, these are growing and processing the garden, harvesting, peeling the pericarp and drying. Next, the nut is sized by size and, in its unpeeled form, is sent for sale or processed into a kernel.

Walnut drying is mandatory for both small volumes of nuts and industrial orchards. At home, you can organize drying on the street, attic or any dry room with air circulation. But in commercial gardens, such methods will be ineffective, risky and too costly.

For drying walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds, industrial dryers or drying complexes are used.

Dryers in a short time dry the nut to the optimum moisture content. At the same time, drying occurs evenly throughout the entire batch of nuts, minimizing the risk of mold in the future.

Walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds enter the dryer completely peeled from the pericarp and its residues.

Depending on the initial moisture content of the nut, the temperature and drying time are set. At the end of the drying, the moisture content of the nut is measured - if the nut has reached a moisture content of 10% or less, it is unloaded. Otherwise, the nut continues to dry.

To measure moisture, a portable moisture meter is used, the same as for grain and any other products.

Nuts are immediately unloaded from the dryer, packed in bags and sent for sale or moved to storage sites.

Walnut drying is performed immediately after harvesting, washing and cleaning from the pericarp. Postponing drying is not recommended for two reasons:

- high humidity of fresh walnuts, which lie in bulk for a long time without air circulation, will provoke the appearance of mold and it will quickly spread to the entire batch;
- colleagues will start the nut season before you.

With large volumes of walnuts, it becomes necessary to use drying complexes with a single walnut loading system. According to individual requests, we design drying complexes with a capacity of 5 tons / day and more.

Given the seasonality and timing of equipment manufacturing, the design of workshops at the gardens begins in March-May, and the preparation of the premises and the order of equipment begin a few months before the start of the season.
