Harvesting is not a problem as long as the garden is small or the trees are still young and just beginning to bear fruit. As soon as the harvests increase, it becomes harder and longer to collect walnuts.
According to generally accepted rules, the walnut should be collected:
- Every day as it falls to the ground. After all, a walnut that lies on the ground for a long time, especially in a pericarp or in damp weather, will darken or become moldy.
- After the first signs of ripeness, it is all shaken on the ground or on an awning.
Picking a walnut a little each day is very time consuming and physically demanding. In addition, this delays the start of the walnut season for the orchard owner, which means he is lagging behind competitors who are already selling the walnut and making a profit. Therefore, in walnut gardens, the second option is always followed.
In industrial gardens, harvesting is always automated because:
1. There is not always time, opportunity and health to collect on your own or together with partners / family.
2. The walnut does not wait - the quality of the walnut deteriorates with untimely harvesting, and there is also a risk of losing the crop, because it will be stretched by rodents, birds or unscrupulous people.
3. Employees need to make their work easier in order to reduce the same number of workers and wage costs.
4. Automation speeds up the harvesting process, which means that the walnut moves to the next stages faster.
After harvesting, the walnut must be cleaned of the remnants of the green pericarp and sent to dry.
A tree shaker is used to shake the walnut in orchards. It can be a cable shaker, which is attached to any tractor, or hydraulic - it is used in large industrial gardens. The walnut is shaken directly on the ground or on a pre-spread awning.
From the ground, the walnut is harvested by walnut collectors. They are used both in home gardens and in industrial ones. They collect on any surface, speed up and make harvesting more comfortable.
